Weather can be unpredictable, and it's one thing you can't control on your wedding day but you can certainly prepare for it! Having a well-thought-out Plan B ensures your wedding day remains just as magical, rain or shine.

Have the conversation early
One of the discussions I have with couples planning an outdoor wedding is their wet-weather backup plan. Many already have an alternative venue in place, but for those crossing their fingers and hoping for the best, I have to remind them that Wellington weather can at times be unpredictable. It’s best to prepare for any scenario to avoid unnecessary stress.
Keep your guests comfortable
Your wedding day should be memorable for all the right reasons. No bride dreams of arriving,, to navigate their way down a wet/muddy aisle feeling like a soggy mess. Likewise, your guests won’t enjoy huddling under trees or umbrellas, struggling to hear your heartfelt vows.
The same goes for a mid-summer wedding and keeping your guests hydrated and protected from the blazing sun! Think carefully about the position and time where your ceremony will be held, as well as where your guests will be seated or standing. You may want to consider some umbrellas for shade or a cold water station close by if the day is forecast to be hot!
Talk to your venue/suppliers
Many venues offer stunning indoor options for a rainy day wedding, sometimes allowing you to make the call just hours before your ceremony. If your venue doesn’t provide an alternative, check whether you can transition your ceremony into your reception space if needed.
From a celebrant’s perspective, conducting a ceremony in the rain isn’t ideal. Holding an umbrella while managing a script, microphone, and legal documents can be tricky! Sound systems and important paperwork don’t mix well with water, so a covered alternative is always a good idea.
A Plan B that feels like Plan A
A solid contingency plan gives you peace of mind, ensuring your wedding remains beautiful, no matter the weather. When well-executed, your guests may not even realize Plan B wasn’t your first choice!
The most important thing to remember
At the end of the day, rain or shine, you’re marrying the love of your life, the person you have chosen to spend the rest of your life with. The weather won’t change that!
In short, putting a solid wet weather contingency in place, will provide you with absolute peace of mind that no matter what the weather, you will be guaranteed a truly beautiful Plan B that can actually leave your guests thinking it was the Plan A all along! All it needs is a little organising in advance, so that every one of your suppliers can make sure it happens. I'm onboard with whatever decision you make.
